Scripture Reading:
Luke 2:10 - “Then the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.’”

Devotional
The Christmas season is often filled with thoughts of angels—decorations, carols, and nativity scenes remind us of their role in Jesus’ birth. But beyond their beauty and symbolism lies a deeper truth about their purpose. Angels are messengers of God, bringing tidings of great joy and proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ.
Angels appear frequently throughout Scripture, but their activity around Jesus’ birth is unparalleled. From Gabriel’s announcement to Mary to the angelic proclamation to the shepherds, their primary mission was to herald the arrival of the Messiah. These "tidings" were not just announcements; they were divine revelations about the salvation God had prepared for humanity.

The Purpose of Angels
Angels are described as "angelos" in Greek, meaning "messenger." Their role as God’s emissaries is clear throughout Scripture. They deliver messages of hope, direction, and sometimes warning. At Jesus’ birth, their mission centered on declaring the fulfillment of God’s promise: the arrival of a Savior.
In the New Testament, angels focus heavily on Jesus, with ten specific encounters spanning His birth, resurrection, and ascension. This demonstrates their primary purpose: to serve and glorify Him.

Application
While we are not heavenly beings, we share a similar calling as followers of Christ. We, too, are sent to bring tidings of great joy to all people. Our lives, words, and actions should point others to the hope found in Jesus.

 1. Proclaim the Good News

Reflect on ways you can share the story of Jesus with others. The angels proclaimed His arrival with joy and clarity—let us do the same in our words and actions.

 2. Embrace Your Role as a Messenger
You don’t need wings or divine radiance to carry God’s message. Through the Holy Spirit, you are empowered to be a light to those around you.

Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of the angels who joyfully proclaimed the Good News of Jesus’ birth. Help me to follow their lead by sharing Your message of hope and salvation with others. Empower me through Your Holy Spirit to be a faithful messenger of Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
