Scripture:
Genesis 40:1-8 –
“When Joseph came to them in the morning, he saw that they looked distraught. So he asked Pharaoh’s officers… ‘Why do you look so sad today?’ …They said to him, ‘We had dreams… but there is no one to interpret them.’ Then Joseph said to them, ‘Don’t interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.’”
2 Corinthians 5:17 –
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come!”
Devotional:
When life keeps knocking you down—betrayal, loss, broken relationships, unfair accusations—it’s easy to question who you are. Joseph had every reason to forget himself. He was no longer the favored son, no longer the robe-wearing dreamer. Now he was a slave, a prisoner, and forgotten.
But even in the pit, he knew his identity wasn’t wrapped up in what had been taken from him. He was still Joseph. Still called. Still gifted. Still God’s.
We don’t talk enough about how trauma, loss, or transition can shake our sense of identity. But here’s what Joseph’s story reminds us: Your identity is not determined by your situation. It’s defined by your God.
Joseph kept using his gift. He kept pointing to God. He stayed faithful to who he was—even when everything around him said otherwise.
You are not your last failure. You are not what someone did to you. You are not what they called you. You are who God says you are.
Prayer:
Father, help me remember who I am when life makes me question everything. Remind me that my identity isn’t in my job, my role, or my past—but in You. Let me rest in the truth that I am Your child, called by name, and never forgotten. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
