Scripture:

John 5:39–40 -"You pore over the Scriptures because you think you have eternal life in them, and yet they testify about Me. But you are not willing to come to Me so that you may have life."

Devotional:

The religious leaders in Jesus’ day knew the Scriptures.

They memorized the prophecies.

They taught the law.

They were the experts in “looking for signs.”

And yet, when the fulfillment of all those signs stood right in front of them—Jesus—they missed Him.

Worse, they rejected Him.

Why? Because they didn’t want a Savior—they wanted control.

They were more interested in being right than being redeemed.

Jesus fulfilled prophecy after prophecy:

  • Born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14 → Matthew 1)
  • Born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2 → Matthew 2)
  • Healed the sick, gave sight to the blind (Isaiah 35 → Matthew 11)
  • Rode into Jerusalem on a donkey (Zechariah 9:9 → Matthew 21)
  • Crucified and resurrected (Isaiah 53 → All four Gospels)

The signs were there—but their pride blinded them.

Don’t make the same mistake.

It’s not enough to know the signs if we miss the One they point to.

Jesus is the sign. Jesus is the Savior. And eternal life isn’t in a timeline—it’s in Him.

Prayer:

Jesus, I don’t want to be someone who knows all about You but doesn’t know You. Don’t let pride, fear, or distraction keep me from seeing You clearly. You are the fulfillment of every promise. You are the One the world is waiting for—and the One I need every day. Amen.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Are you more focused on studying prophecy or seeking the presence of Jesus?
  2. Have you allowed religion, pride, or tradition to blind you to the reality of who Jesus is?
  3. What would it look like to stop just looking for signs—and start walking with the Savior?
