Scripture:
John 1:35-39 Again the next day, John was standing with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look! The Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him say this and followed Jesus. 38 When Jesus turned and noticed them following Him, He asked them, “What are you looking for?” They said to Him, “Rabbi”, “where are You staying?” 39 “Come and see,” He replied.

Devotional:
As we conclude the series on Becoming the Twelve, today we reflect on an essential question: Why did the disciples choose to follow Jesus? This question might seem simple at first, but when we dig deeper into the context of their lives, professions, and personal struggles, we discover that each disciple had a unique journey that led them to say “yes” to Jesus.

We only have the detailed calling stories of a few disciples: Peter, Andrew, James, John, Philip, Nathanael, and Matthew. Some of these men were fishermen—hardworking, humble men from modest backgrounds who were likely struggling to provide for their families. When Jesus called Peter, Andrew, James, and John, they were in the middle of their daily work—casting nets and mending boats. Matthew, on the other hand, was a tax collector, despised by his own people for collaborating with the oppressive Roman government. He was wealthy, yet he was isolated and rejected by his community. Each man was living a life filled with challenges, disappointments, and perhaps even a sense of futility.

So why did they follow Jesus?
For Peter, Andrew, James, and John, it might have been the miraculous catch of fish that opened their eyes (Luke 5:1-11), but Andrew actually started following Jesus earlier, simply because John the Baptist declared, “Look! The Lamb of God!” For Matthew, it was the compelling invitation to leave behind his corrupt lifestyle. Each man’s encounter was different, yet all shared one thing in common: They were drawn to Jesus because He offered something more—a purpose greater than themselves, a hope beyond their circumstances, and a message of redemption that was desperately needed.

Today, the same is true for us. There are countless reasons we come to Jesus, whether it’s a longing for purpose, a desire for forgiveness, or simply because someone invited us to “come and see.” Whatever the initial reason, what truly matters is what happens after that decision. The disciples’ understanding of who Jesus was and why they followed Him grew over time. As they spent more time with Him, they realized that He was more than a teacher or miracle-worker—He was the Son of God, the Savior of the world.

Reflection Questions:
 1. What initially drew you to Jesus? Was it an experience, a person, or a moment of realization?
 2. How has your understanding of Jesus changed since you first decided to follow Him?
 3. If you haven’t yet decided to follow Jesus, what questions or doubts are holding you back?

Application:
Take a few minutes today to reflect on your journey with Jesus. Write down the reasons why you chose to follow Him in the first place. If you find that your initial reason was different from your current motivation, that’s okay—spiritual growth often shifts our perspective. Consider sharing your story with a friend or loved one as a way of affirming your commitment and encouraging others.

Closing Prayer:
Lord, thank You for calling me to follow You. Help me to remember the reasons I first said “yes” and to deepen my understanding of who You are. Let my relationship with You grow stronger every day. Guide me as I seek to follow You more closely. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
