Scripture Reading:
Luke 1:23-25 - "After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. ‘The Lord has done this for me,’ she said. ‘In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people.’"
Devotional
Elizabeth’s story is one of waiting, hope deferred, and the miraculous fulfillment of God’s promise. As a couple advanced in years, Elizabeth and Zechariah had likely resigned themselves to a life without children. Yet, God intervened, showing His favor by answering their prayers in a way that only He could. This wasn’t just any child they were to conceive—it was John the Baptist, the forerunner of the Messiah.
The Meaning of Favor in Elizabeth’s Story
The Greek word epeidon, translated as "shown favor," carries the sense of being considered or looked upon with concern. Elizabeth recognized God’s personal care in her life, rejoicing that her years of waiting had been redeemed by His blessing. Her experience echoes the stories of Sarah and Hannah, other women in Scripture who witnessed God’s power to bring life where there seemed to be no possibility of it.
For Elizabeth, favor came after years of longing and unanswered prayers. Her joy wasn’t just in receiving a child, but in witnessing God’s faithfulness. She declared that God had “taken away [her] disgrace,” demonstrating that His favor brings redemption and restores hope.
