Scripture:

Genesis 37:3–4

"Now Israel loved Joseph more than his other sons because Joseph was a son born to him in his old age, and he made a robe of many colors for him. When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him..."

Devotional:

From the beginning, Joseph’s robe wasn’t just about fabric—it was about favor. His father’s gift set him apart, and that distinction sparked jealousy and conflict. Clothing in Scripture often symbolizes identity. What Joseph wore told others who he was. And people responded accordingly.

We’re not so different today. What we wear—physically, emotionally, spiritually—still signals something. Some of us wear ambition. Some wear shame. Others carry the weight of rejection or regret. And over time, we start to believe those garments define us.

Joseph’s story shows us that garments can be removed. Stripped by others. Swapped by circumstance. But identity? That’s given by God.

You might be wearing labels people have put on you. You might be stuck in patterns shaped by your past. But God never meant for you to stay wrapped in those robes. He has something better.

Prayer:

Lord, show me what I’ve been wearing that You never meant for me to carry. Help me see myself the way You do. Strip away false identities, and clothe me with Your truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What labels or “robes” have others placed on you that you've been carrying?
  2. Have you ever mistaken someone else’s perception of you for your true identity?
  3. What would it look like to start wearing God’s view of you instead?
