Scripture:
John 14:16-17- And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever. 17 He is the Spirit of truth. The world is unable to receive Him because it doesn’t see Him or know Him. But you do know Him, because He remains with you and will be in you.

Acts 1:8 - you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

Reflection:
As Jesus prepared to leave His disciples, He promised them that they would not be left alone. In John 14:16-17, Jesus says, "And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept Him because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you." This promise of the Holy Spirit is central to our understanding of discipleship today.

The Holy Spirit’s role in discipleship is multifaceted. He is our Counselor, guiding us into all truth, convicting us of sin, and empowering us to live out the teachings of Jesus. The disciples of Jesus were empowered by the Holy Spirit to carry out their mission, as seen in Acts 1:8, where Jesus tells them, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

The pastor emphasizes that while the original disciples had the privilege of walking with Jesus in the flesh, we have the equally powerful privilege of walking with Jesus through the Holy Spirit. The Spirit enables us to know Jesus intimately, to understand His teachings, and to live out His commands with courage and conviction.

Discipleship without the Holy Spirit would be impossible. It is the Spirit who transforms our hearts, renews our minds, and empowers us to follow Jesus in the midst of a world that often opposes His ways. The Spirit is also the one who bears fruit in our lives, making us more like Jesus as we grow in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).

Reflection Questions:
    1. How have you experienced the Holy Spirit’s guidance and empowerment in your discipleship journey?
    2. In what areas of your life do you need to rely more on the Holy Spirit for strength and wisdom?
    3. How can you cultivate a deeper relationship with the Holy Spirit in your daily walk with Jesus?

Application:
Take time today to pray specifically for the Holy Spirit’s guidance in your life. Ask the Spirit to reveal areas where you need to grow, to empower you to live out your faith, and to help you become more like Jesus. Consider incorporating practices such as regular prayer, Scripture meditation, and seeking the Spirit’s guidance in decision-making into your daily routine.

Prayer:
Holy Spirit, I thank You for Your presence in my life. I acknowledge that I cannot follow Jesus on my own—I need Your guidance, strength, and wisdom. Fill me anew with Your power and help me to walk closely with You each day. Teach me to rely on You more fully and to follow Jesus with all my heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
